Wooden Mechanical Toy, “Flail”

Another first year project consisted of designing and building a functional mechanical wooden device or “toy”. The final Model is constructed using Red Oak and Black Walnut, while working on the premise that when a crank is turned it activates a piston which in its back and forth movement would activate a set of swinging arms that would swing in opposite directions. The user would have to quite literally “play” with this to get the right swing.
Here is a sketch of the initial idea for "Flail"
Another detailed view of the mechanisms.
Here is a sketch model, made to prove the concept. constructed from insulation foam, wooden dowels, foamcore, and various other materials.
Comparison between the sketch model, and final model.
